Programs
Frontiers in Physiology has multiple programs that focus on science teacher professional development at different levels.
The
Online Teacher Professional Development course is a new (and only) offering for the 2010 Frontiers program. In this year-long, online teacher professional development course for middle and high school science teachers, participants will explore, apply, and reflect on Six Star Science, a research-based framework for supporting excellence in science education. Teacher fellows will also engage in online discussions, and utilize tools and strategies to enhance student-centered learning by effectively transforming lessons. Teacher fellows will attend and be honored at the APS’ annual scientific meeting, Experimental Biology.
The
Research Teacher Fellowship program is for middle and high school science teachers who seek to experience scientific research over the summer months, explore effective pedagogy (online and during a summer workshop week), and develop new curricular materials over a period of one year.
Local Outreach Teams (LOTs) are the grassroots arm of the Frontiers in Physiology program in communities across the nation. LOTs coordinate and facilitate local in-service workshops for teachers and schools to disseminate Frontiers materials and resources. Each LOT includes an APS member and K-12 educators who are familiar with the Frontiers program.
The Frontiers Leadership Fellows program offers Alumni Research Teacher Fellows the opportunity to enhance their leadership, mentoring, technology, and curriculum development skills. Each fellowship year, the selected Leadership Fellows mentor the Research Teachers to cultivate a learning community in the Frontiers fellowship.
